Affording Your Fertility
Treatment

Infertility affects about one in seven couples of childbearing age, and the stress of infertility can be magnified by the stress of paying for treatment. Fertility treatment is a highly specialized service which requires many tests, medications, and input from a variety of skilled physicians and technicians.

As a result, the costs of treatment are a significant financial commitment—on average, couples can expect to pay $18,000 for a single cycle of IVF if they do not have insurance coverage.

Fertility Treatment Insurance More Available than Ever

Fortunately, infertility treatment is becoming more accessible than ever. Under the federal Affordable Care Act, infertility treatment is now defined as an essential benefit in the state of Illinois. This means that all Illinois employers with more than 25 employees must offer it, as well as HMOs with provider networks in the state.

To qualify, you must be an Illinois resident who has tried and failed to achieve pregnancy for at least twelve months, or who has a known condition that causes infertility (e.g., you are sterile due to chemotherapy, surgery, a congenital issue, childhood infection such as mumps, etc.).

What Insurers Must Cover

Illinois law mandates coverage of the following procedures:

  • Testing
  • Prescription drugs
  • Artificial insemination
  • In-vitro fertilization (IVF)
  • Gamete intrafallopian tube transfer (GIFT)
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
  • Donor sperm and eggs (medical costs)
    • Includes coverage of oocyte or sperm retrieval and subsequent procedures used to transfer the oocytes or sperm to the covered recipient
    • Covers medical expenses of your donor, including but not limited to physical examinations, laboratory screening, psychological screening, and prescription drugs if established as prerequisites to donation by the insurer

InVia Fertility Specialists is a contracted preferred provider for most major insurance companies. It is a good idea to contact your insurance company or employer directly to inquire about the specifics of your insurance benefits, but in our experience, couples are often surprised to find out how much of their infertility services are covered by their insurance.

Financing Fertility Treatment Without Insurance

For couples without insurance (e.g. self-employed individuals), our Shared IVF Success Program (SISP) may enable you to financially plan for treatment. This program offers you the option to pre-pay for up to three IVF cycles.

If you do not achieve a pregnancy past the first trimester, you can recover your funds and use them to pursue other options, such as adoption.
