Success of acupuncture during IVF

success of acupuncture during ivfAcupuncture has been gaining popularity among couples who are having trouble getting pregnant. But many people make the mistake of thinking acupuncture and medical fertility treatment are mutually exclusive.

In fact, a widely published German study shows the success of acupuncture during IVF. The study found that using acupuncture with IVF achieved a 42% clinical pregnancy rate compared to only 26% in the control group that did not receive acupuncture. When acupuncture and Chinese nutrition are used in conjunction with IVF, clinical experience suggests the pregnancy rate can be raised to at least 60%.

Though acupuncture is the primary modality used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat infertility and/or to enhance fertility, Chinese nutrition therapy, yoga, massage/bodywork can also be integrated into the treatment plan to ensure greater success. For couples going through IUI or IVF procedures, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can help:

  • Improve the function of the ovaries to produce better quality eggs
  • Regulate the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles
  • Increase the blood flow to the uterus and increase the thickness of the uterine lining
  • Relax the patient and decrease stress/anxiety
  • Prevent uterine contraction
  • Lessen the side effects of Western drugs used in IVF
  • Strengthen the patient's immune system
  • Improve male semen to create better quality and quantity of embryos
  • Decrease the chance of miscarriage
