FAQ’s about the use of ANDROGEL 1% in women undergoing fertility treatment

Androgel 1% use in women undergoing fertility treatment

What is ANDROGEL 1%?

ANDROGEL 1% is a prescription medicine that contains testosterone (T). We recommend using the ANDROGEL 1% pump.

Why have I been prescribed ANDROGEL 1%?

Recent data have shown that T may increase ovarian response during IVF. T increases FSH-receptor activity and growth promoting substances in the follicles (insulin-like growth factor-1 or IGF-1). This results in an increase in the antral follicle count as well as an increase in the number of mature eggs, good quality embryos and implantation rate. ANDROGEL 1% is more effective than the generic version of the drug;

Who should not use ANDROGEL 1%?

Do not use ANDROGEL 1% if you:

  • have breast cancer
  • are pregnant or breast-feeding. ANDROGEL 1% may harm your unborn or breast-feeding baby.
  • have heart problems
  • have liver or kidney problems
  • have problems breathing while you sleep (sleep apnea)

Please tell your doctor if you take insulin, corticosteroids or medicines that decrease blood clotting.

How should I use ANDROGEL 1% pump?

Before using a new bottle of ANDROGEL 1% for the first time, you will need to prime the pump. To prime the ANDROGEL 1% pump; slowly push the pump all the way down 3 times. Do not use any ANDROGEL 1% that came out while priming. Wash it down the sink to avoid accidental exposure to others. Your ANDROGEL 1% pump is ready to use.

Remove the cap from the pump. Then, position the nozzle over the palm of your hand and slowly push the pump all the way down. Apply ANDROGEL 1% to the application site. You may also apply ANDROGEL 1% directly to the application site.

You should use 12.5 mg (one press of the pump) of ANDROGEL 1% daily for 3 weeks prior to starting stimulation.

Where should I apply the Androgel 1%?

ANDROGEL 1% is to be applied to the area of your shoulders, upper arms, or abdomen that will be covered by a short sleeve t-shirt. Do not apply ANDROGEL 1% to any other part of your body such as breasts, thighs, chest or back. Before applying ANDROGEL 1%, make sure that your shoulders, upper arms, and abdomen are clean, dry, and there is no broken skin.

Apply ANDROGEL 1% at the same time each morning. ANDROGEL 1% should be applied after showering or bathing.

Wash your hands right away with soap and water after applying ANDROGEL 1%. ANDROGEL 1% is flammable until dry. Let ANDROGEL 1% dry before smoking (you shouldn’t be smoking in the first place!) or going near an open flame. Let the application areas dry completely before putting on a t-shirt.

What are the possible side effects of ANDROGEL 1%?

So far with the use of a (relatively) low dose and short duration (three weeks) of use there have been no reports of increase hair growth or voice change with the use of ANDROGEL 1%.

ANDROGEL 1% can transfer from your body to others. This can happen if other people come into contact with the area where the ANDROGEL 1% was applied. Other women and children should avoid contact with the unwashed or unclothed area where ANDROGEL 1% has been applied. If a woman or child makes contact with the ANDROGEL 1% application area, the contact area on the woman or child should be washed well with soap and water right away. To lower the risk of transfer of ANDROGEL 1%, you should apply it only to your shoulders and upper arms, areas that will be covered by a short-sleeve T-shirt. Wash your hands right away with soap and water after applying. After the gel has dried, cover the application area with clothing until you have washed the application area well or have showered. If you expect another person to have skin-to-skin contact with your shoulders or upper arms, first wash the application area well with soap and water.

ANDROGEL 1% can cause serious side effects, including:

  • Swelling of your ankles, feet, or body, with or without heart failure. This may cause serious problems for people who have heart, kidney, or liver disease
  • Enlarged or painful breasts
  • Having problems breathing while you sleep (sleep apnea)
  • Blood clots in the legs; this can include pain, swelling, or redness of your legs
