I'm Going To Pee!!

Why do we make you fill your bladder for your embryo transfer? We don't do this to make you uncomfortable, we have you fill your bladder for two very important reasons.

  1. Ultrasound works with high frequency sound waves which are conducted by water (your urine is the water here). During the embryo transfer we use an abdominal ultrasound to help with the placement of your embryo(s). With the ultrasound we are able to visualize your bladder and your uterus. Your physician will be looking at your uterus and focusing on the lining. They will be able to see the catheter advancing and will place the embryo(s) in the correct area of the lining.

  2. A full bladder also helps to push the bowel away and actually pushes down on the uterus to "straighten" it out. This makes it easier to guide the catheter and place the embryos in the proper area of the uterine lining reducing the risk of bumping the catheter tip.

During your embryo transfer we do instruct you to drink on your way into the office. Once you are admitted and you have spoken to the embryologist regarding the embryos that are going to be transferred we try to move along as soon as we can so you do not feel uncomfortable with your full bladder. Having a full bladder is no fun!

We all agree but it does help your physician achieve a perfect embryo transfer for you.

We do try to relax you by allowing your partner in the room to help distract you. We also encourage you to follow the transfer on the monitor so that you are not just focusing on your full bladder and the feeling that you have to pee. Once your transfer is complete and we have an all clear from the embryologist we will let you use the restroom. It is funny that many of the patients do not have as strong of an urge to pee as they did prior to the transfer. Your nerves do play a role here.

Please do not be so anxious about your full bladder and peeing during your transfer....you wouldn't be the first and I'm sure you won't be the last!
