The “when” “why” “how” and “where” should we go for fertility treatment.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there currently with regards to infertility. In fact a recent study showed that 93% of couples that went to see an infertility specialist wished they had gone sooner. Whether it’s because of fear of the unknown or incorrect information obtained, the fact remains that time is ticking when it comes to conceiving.

“When should we go?”

I say “we” because it’s not just a female issue. 40% percent of infertility is female related and 40% is male related and 20% both partners contribute to their infertility. The answer is quite simple. If you’re less than 35 years old and you’ve been trying to conceive for 1 year without success you should schedule a consult with an infertility specialist. If you’re older than 35 years and you’ve been trying to conceive for 6 months without success you should schedule an appointment with an infertility specialist. Unfortunately women are born with all of the eggs they’re ever going to have. As women age, the quality of these eggs also decreases. This means their biological clock is in fact ticking. The longer you wait and assume that it will eventually happen the more precious time you’re wasting.

“Why should we go?”

Infertility affects 1 in 8 couples trying to conceive. Time is a contributing factor so having the ability to have an early diagnosis increases your chances of conceiving. This number shows you are not alone.

“How do we go?”

This is the question that is often answered incorrectly. If you are a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) policyholder, you usually do not need a referral to see an infertility specialist. If you’ve been trying to conceive and you fall into the time frame previously discussed then make the call. Patients with a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) policy will need a referral. In Illinois we are very fortunate the state mandates fertility coverage for most companies. An initial consult will give you the answers that you’re looking for and put you on a path to your ultimate goal.
