How to Prepare for Your First Fertility Appointment

For all of our patients in Illinois, the first fertility consultation is a crucial start to your fertility journey. The time leading up to your first appointment is a great opportunity to consider your treatment goals and collect anything you want to share with our specialists.

At InVia Fertility, we believe that experienced, personalized care is vital to helping you achieve your family-building goals. Below, we've compiled some information to help you prepare for your first appointment with us.

What Can I Expect During My First Fertility Appointment?

Your first fertility appointment is a chance for us to connect and make a plan for treatment. When starting treatments of any kind, it's important to familiarize yourself with both the process and the team of professionals who will care for you.

Your first appointment will be a time for us to discuss your medical history, family-building goals, and various treatment options. Following your initial consultation, your physician will recommend a series of fertility tests for you (and your partner, if applicable). These tests will provide your physician with valuable insight into your fertility health for recommending a specific treatment plan for you.

Most importantly, your fertility consultation creates a foundation for your journey with us. Our experienced specialists use evidence-based care to create customized treatment plans for you. We will review your medical history and family-building goals in great detail, so we can create an individualized treatment plan with you after receiving the results of your tests.

In addition to our fertility success, we prioritize empathy and compassion as we navigate this journey alongside our patients. Our providers are active listeners, and as a patient, you’re an active participant in your care plan.

What Should I Bring to My First Fertility Appointment?

You may have been trying to conceive for a long time before scheduling your first fertility appointment or may have experienced failed fertility treatments elsewhere. If that's the case, you'll want to provide any information you have about your pregnancy attempts ahead of your appointment to help us better understand your needs and how we can help.

We also recommend that you bring the following to your first appointment:

  • Your insurance cards and IDs
  • Any notes or questions you have about your fertility
  • A list of your current medications, vitamins, or supplements

We will ask you to provide your medical records and family history prior to your first appointment. This gives your physician a chance to review your records prior to the appointment and be as productive as possible during their time with you. Failure to provide this crucial information ahead of time may result in a rescheduled appointment.

What Questions Should I Ask at My First Fertility Appointment?

We understand that couples and individuals seeking fertility treatments have a lot of questions. We'll have a lot of information to share during your first appointment, and it may benefit you to think of any questions you want to ask us ahead of time.

Some questions you may want to consider asking us include:

  • What fertility treatments are right for me?
  • What fertility treatments will my insurance cover?
  • What tests will I need to begin fertility treatments?
  • What medications will I need to take throughout treatment?
  • What is the timeline of my fertility treatment?

If you have additional questions about your health and treatment options, our specialists will be happy to answer them. Our goal is to help you understand the fertility journey that lies ahead and direct you toward the resources you need to successfully grow your family.
