Dr Robert Edwards (1925 - 2013)

The world of reproductive medicine has lost a true hero, as news of Sir Robert Edwards passing was reported.

Dr. Edwards, along with Dr. Patrick Steptoe, successfully pioneered the field of in-vitro fertilization, leading to the birth of the first “test-tube baby”, Louise Brown, in 1978. Since that time, his breakthrough has laid the groundwork for further assisted reproductive technology innovations, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), embryo biopsy (PGD), and embryo cryopreservation and thawing.

In 2010 he was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the development of in vitro fertilization and received knighthood the following year.

Nothing is more special than a child — Dr. Robert Edwards

We couldn’t agree with that statement more. All of us in the field of reproductive medicine, and the millions of babies and families helped by your hard work, thank you for your contributions and dedication to the field of assisted reproductive technologies.

You will be remembered by millions.
